Will up date as I go. Got the car fully tore down today with the cam removed and one head off. The other head will come off tomorrow along with some serious garage cleaning after todays battle royale with the car. Today I stand in victory. Next weekends build up might be a different story though...Enjoy

Great job, Charlie! Thanks for the pictures. I can almost feel my back aching from bending over the fenders all day. ;)

That really puts in perspective how far back those engines are...when you can pull the cam like that.

Interesting valve spring compressor. Is that new technology? If so I think I like the old school C-clamp compressors better. Less set up time at least.

The tool I have is a breeze to use and takes no time to set up at all. It works pretty well too.

You can also use the new type to change springs and retainers without having to remove the heads. Keeping the valves from dropping onto the cylinder is a secrete ;)

True, but I had to see if the valve did any damage to the piston, so heads came off. The top end kit I bought has all the new head bolts as well as the head gaskets so might as well pull them both off. I have the secret tool to do the springs with the heads on without dropping the valve. Your secret is out Rob. I have tools to fix tools. :)

Ha ha! Yeah I suppose it's not really a secrete. Comes in really handy for Ti retainers though since they are wear items......

Best of luck!

My new springs were ordered with Ti retainers. What is the wear life on these bad boys?

I don't know for sure... I think it's gonna be a personal experience type of thing.
I've heard a bunch of different things. My plan was to check them fairly regularly (every 3-5K) and change them every 10k miles or so. However, I've heard of guys running them for much longer with no galling well beyond 10K miles. Sometimes as much as 30k! I should mention too that this is on a engine that revs to 9000rpms too.

I personally think the galling problem has more to do with dual springs. The inner spring rotates and does most of the galling on the retainer so it's an unknown factor. I run the dual springs at the highest rate i could get so I'm expecting them to not last more than 10k (but hoping for more).

Im also running a dual spring good up to .675 lift. I was told that you could put them on and never have to deal with it again. I will probably look at the valve train every 5k or so to make sure everything is up to par.

wow, look like the damage was worse than expected, you're missing 2 valves per cylinder.
j/k

keep us updated with more pics when you have progress.

Some updates. Cam kit showed up to the house minus the cam. Apparently it is being shipped straight from Comp Cams. So today I cleaned up the heads, installed the new springs, and dropped the headers in. Header install was still a bit of a pain even though the heads were off. Can't cant imagine putting them in with the heads on. The plan is to get the heads and intake back on tomorrow and then wait for the cam to show up. Pics...

New cam finally showed up today. Block is all cleaned and everything is ready to be put back together. I will be waiting on 02 extensions to fire the car since I forgot to order them. They are needed because of the long tube headers. Other than that I will be crossing my fingers for everything to go back together the way it all came off.

What cam did you go with? With some luck maybe you can give it a break-in run down to Buttonwillow on Saturday to come out and watch, ride along and hang out.
