Hey Everybody,
Who on here ran at the Lemoore NAS way back when?
Please send me the location so I can measure it with Google Maps.
I am just trying to compare it with the old Winton Ramp.
Thanks for any information you can send me about the location on base.

Josh, I need to bring you on base so we can check out potential sites. Acquiring any sites on the north end of the base may be difficult due to higher security levels on this side of the base(Runway and ramp side). I have yet to give up hope on bringing the SCCA back to the base, however it is harder than it sounds.

I think it was the square pad just north of Lemoore Naval Air Station Road, and east of Reeves Ave. There are several squarish pads all around and in between where the two runways meet, near the middle of the base. It would be the one most to the south, and a little closer to the east runway, kind of off by itself. I'm not sure though.

Josh,
We ran in alot of different areas. The one area we used the most was
located north of the tunnel on the west side of the base near the
tower. I think? The area we got to use depended on which
squadrons happen to on base at the time, if I remember correctly.

While it wasn't quite as big as the Winton Ramp at Castle, the concrete was much newer and smooth as glass. Every square was 25', and we had an excellent site map (drawn to scale by Alan James, a veteran member of the 90's who was also a civil engineer). So when you chaired the event, you drew out your course map using the 25' grids (the perfect width for a nice open flowing course), and set-up was a matter of simply driving the trailer around square by square, and presto! Just like playing "Battleship!" when you were a kid. The concrete was broom-brushed, so it was very abrasive on tires. And the expansion joints were a bit wider, which made for a sharp slap between slabs. But folks would come from all over the state for the annual Golden State Challenge, a two day event. Other than Crow's Landing, probably the best site in California.

This NEEDS to happen again. Hopefully we can work something out with the base in the near future!!

hahaha! That first one is awesome with "beware of jet blast" in the background.
But from the sounds of it, this would be a really awesome place to go back to!

Great pictures Ric. :) Two things made me curious: 1, the Alfa appears to have two drivers based on the shoe polish numbers. Did the driver simply point to their number at the start line back then so the timing crew would know which driver it was? 2, I see one cone near the Sprite that is bigger than all the other cones.

Thanks Bryan. Congrats on your performance at Packwood. I wish we could
have been there. Back in the day our events were pretty relaxed. I'm sure
that the people in timing were able to tell who was driving and match the
car number to the correct driver. As far as the cones go we had all kinds
of different sizes. Most of our cones were collected along the highways and
by-ways by various members. I could tell you a few stories about cone
collecting but I'm not sure if the statue of limitations is up yet:D
