Yep, Daniel is right Gran Turismo.
Does anybody else have a video game recommendation?
There is not really any legal place to learn autocross other than at events.

I like Simbin's GTR.

iRacing is by far the best simulator of all time.

Or you could rent one of these bad boys form Emilio. I believe they use rFactor.

Me and Bradford used to go to the "Gymkanha" part of Gran Turismo, and then manually move the cones around (very carefully with the nose of the car, so they don't tip over) to make a much better course, with more open slaloms, etc. The course they give you is just stupid tight. Then practice was much more like a real auotcross

Yes, definetly get a steering wheel system. At some point you run up against a wall where you just can't get the car control with that stupid midget joystick, and trying to get partial throttle/brake with a thumb button is just nonsense. At that point it's hard to advance any further in the game.

simulators are fine and fun but they don't actually translate to real world events very well. You need to feel what the car is doing in order to accurately make adjustments to your driving line.

I have a g25 wheel. I play gtr and grid on my pc. its definitely fun but definitely not like driving your car on course

Gran Turismo is only for the PlayStation and that is why I bought my PlayStation. I think it is one of the best simulations with a whole bunch of cars.
Yes a Steering Wheel is a requirement for the best learning but the concept of turn in and braking can be learned with the joystick which are not so JOYful.
I saw those iracing simulators when I went to the Lexus IS-F driving experience. They also had them over at Laguna Seca for the ALMS Races last year. I want to build my own. Anybody here got the computer skills to figure out the outputs from the games. I can build whatever is needed for the seat and controls.

that would be a seat setup!

That game has been my favorite racing game ever since the first GT came out on regular playstation.

It is true that there is no substitute for the real thing, but as far as car realism and driving technique, GT is by far the best for that. You can learn how to map out the best line to drive and learn breaking points.

on a side not, if anybody has an old wheel they dont want or need that will work with ps2 PM me. i have been wanting one for a long time now.

I quite disagree with you guys about GT....I can't even come close to tuning a good lap on that game. The dynamics are off. Spend some time playing a real simulator and you'll see what I mean. They are much more difficult in the sense that its much closer to the real thing which in turn also makes it much easier.

In my opinion GT is just an arcade game....a really good one but not racing simulator.

Point taken, but for a video game it is real good. the key to getting the most out of the game is with a wheel and pedals, if ur using just the control then its just another game. I agree. but with the wheel for someone without access to a simulator GT is as good as it gets.

No I agree that its a good game (game being the key word).

I think the only thing the game is good for is memorizing the track configuration and turns. Applying a racing line that you've memorized from the game to real life is not going to work....it'll either get you into trouble, be impossible, or slower than the correct line (which in the game will probably be impossibly fast).

If you want to be a better driver I say, save the money you'd spend on the PS3 and game and jut go drive the track. Probably could get 2 track days out of it with coaching.
Would you be a better driver with having only one track day with coaching vs playing GT for a year.....yes (and that included not knowing the track to begin with).
Will you drive faster in real life....no (the game will always be faster and that applies to pro racers too).

True, Nothing beats practicing in a real car. but the lines in the game are not always the best lines in real life but it is the concept that matters. breaking and accelerating from the apex.

I will not argue though, there is no way to simulate how your own car handles and reacts. There is no game to simulate the feel of the car. Which in my opinion is one of the most important things when racing. But point taken, real life situations are far beyond better tools on learning to race than any game.

I posted it on the first page...its the best racing simulator available right now.

rFactor is also good and GTR is also a pretty good but doesn't have the all the physics correct but its WAY better than GT.

I agree with this guy. No, you won't get the "feel" of understeer/oversteer or thresh-hold braking, but the tracks based on real venues are so accurate (GPS is used, I believe) that you CAN learn, say Sears Point or Laguna Seca from your couch. Even the Nurbergring (sp?), LeMans, and others are learnable with enough patience.

Remember that there is more to driving fast than just driving fast. Basic car control, seating position and such stuff is easily practiced on the open road and is conveyable to racing.

On/off ramps can be very valuable as well, yes even while adhering to traffic laws.
