I take it we need to be more interacting with meeting with scca if we want to keep up the Drift sessions.

No, you Needed to be more interactive the last few months when next years schedules were being planned...... no one showed up to the meetings to support so drifting pretty much got canned as car as the SCCA is concerned.

dont mean to sound like a hater, but it is what it is. I tried to do my part, as did Dante and a few others, but we can only do so much with out help from the rest of the drift community.

+1 with Frank and Dante-

Several attempts over the past 5 years have put events at the feet of local drifters and while some events have been successful, most events that are drift-only have suffered from support at the meeting level where mucho planning and effort goes for planning the yearly calendar and specific events.

That being said, there is always autocrossing events where a mildly talented/experienced driver can 'drift' through the course and still have a 'drifting' time rather than an autocross. You will get a time from each run, and as long as you aren't a massive, serial cone killer, we will all enjoy your slide through the course and not give you the 'hairy eyeball' for destroying the course, taking too much time to rebuild the course.

Although I have made this offer (to the dislike of some autoxers) for several years now, I have really only seen Tyler X and Dante utilize this idea to get their drifting 'ya-ya's out. For all those that have asked me how to drift or how I was able to get my pigs of cars to slide, I tell them I practiced at autocrosses. That, and growing up where snow falls is pretty helpful too.

there will be drifting next year just in a smaller way, there are two drift days on the schedule for next year and if a driver wants more time drift the autocross events or test and tune days

I was wondering how many people in our Drift community would want to chair a drift event
and how many are Scca Safety Stewards with a current card.

Panda_Kid,

What in specific are you asking about? Event chairman and what the duties that are expected of it? Safety Steward and what are its duties as well?

what and how do you become one?

This sort of information, is why coming to meetings is so vital. Putting on events is about a lot more than just pulling the trailer to a parking lot throwing out some cones and having at it. There are a lot of "parts" that need to come together to put on a successful event autocross/drift/etc. All of these "parts" are volunteers.

To answer your question, an event chair is responsible for organizing all the people who need to be at the event to make it run.
Is the event insured?
Is the waivers position filled?
Are cars getting teched?
Course setup?
Drivers meeting?

These (plus many more) and any issues that come up are the responsibility of the event chair. Sound like a lot? That's because it is, a successful event comes from a chair's ability to delegate work to volunteers. That's where chief positions come in, they make sure things are being taken care of at events, generally to make sure the event chair doesn't loose his/her mind. This is why we keep stressing that the drift community needs to step up with several card carrying scca members dedicated to pulling events off. It's burn out city if its left to 2 or 3 guys to pull these events off.

A safety steward is a position that MUST be filled at all SCCA events, they must take a class from the regional Solo Safety Steward and then understudy for several events. Paperwork filled out and sent in, and then you must steward X number of events a year to keep it current. This is non negotiable and has to happen as the Safety Steward that day has his name on the paperwork and has a degree of responsibility for any incidents that occur. No safety steward, No event.

This is a crash course in just some of the components to running a successful event. The best way you learn this stuff is by doing, coming out to events and helping out/learning and coming to meetings.

+1 to what Aaron said. You can't get this experience and qualifications by just coming to a few drift events to play around. This is serious stuff.

I too agree with Aaron. For an event to run smoothly, you really should have more than one safety steward so that everyone can participate. If you only have one safety steward at an event, he, she can't compete. We should ask Brian Neme from SFR to hold another class at one of our events in 2012.

THANK YOU Aaron for the great response. As Ron said this is the serious part that produces all the
fun we can have at our events. If we are really serious about having the quality events we are
capable of we we need to take that first step. First things first, go to Scca .com and become a
member. Second step is to come to the meetings on a regular basis not just when your interest
is in jeporady. The third and probaly the most important step is becoming a Safety Steward. If
we are truly serious about our sport we need to be proactive. That means instead of waiting for
Bryan Neamy to come to our events we need to travel to SFR events to get the training we need.
Our first priority will be the get at least one of our members to become a Safety Steward trainner.

Another option is for the drift community to put on their own events...... non SCCA sanctioned.

It's possible for any club to get insurance for an event. At one time Fresno had about 6 autocross/rally clubs - none were SCCA.

We finally went with SCCA because the insurance was cheaper - but the change generated tremendous debates for about a year

before we finally made the move.

Just another option...... SCCA is not the only game in town.

If the drift community had complete control perhaps they would have more involvement in the organizational part of the process.

So has anyone noticed a trend here? It seems that the ones with any opinion are from the Auto-x community.
To really make this Drift program work, we really need to hear from the Drift community. So how 'bout it, who
wants to step up???

Wow really good info! As always, I would love to host more drift events and I'm willing to step up. I do have a few others who are interested and are still learning the ropes. Hey Ric, do we have Brian Neamy's contact info? I would like to give him a call and see if a few of us would be willing to travel up North to get some new members signed up to become safety stewards. Steve: Could you please explain the whole process in hosting our own events in regards to getting our own insurance and other side items that need to be completed? Anyways, let me know!;)

when is the next meeting?i would love to attend these meeting if i can fit time.Uhhh - That's covered in the meeting minutes, another thread, and the calendar. The meetings are always the third Monday of the month. But we don't have a meeting in December and January's meeting is combined with the banquet, so the next regularly scheduled meeting will be the third Monday in February. I guess you'll have to look up the date. I'll not do that for you.
