View Full Version : hypothetical double trophy question

So last year we had an extra "optional" event because we added two Lemoore events to the calendar later in the season. it was decided that of the two events one would count for season points and a competitor could go to both and choose his highest place or prevent an opponent for gaining points. here's my question, since a competitor cannot gain points in a run group after they've already run the finished course (ex. running fun runs during lunch then competing in the afternoon group) it is not possible to accumulate points in multiple classes at one event. What if a competitor attended every event of a season with an optional event and switched classes every other event so that the half plus one requirement was fulfilled for both classes. Would the competitor then be eligible for two class trophies?

You could reword it to the highest PAX'd score to be eligible for points eliminating the loophole.

Basically you are saying that for the lemoore event lets call them A and B. Somebody ran once class one day and one class the next? Effectively scoring points for both giving 7 events for both classes if they spread them out. I'm saying that there should be extra layers of differentiators to determine which class the competitor would score points in. PAX score would come to mind as being usable (ie finishing order based on the PAX index) to tie break the two. This was/is a special case that was only brought about because of a late season schedule add and concerns that adding events people couldn't schedule for would cost them a trophy, so they could attend either event and still not have it count against there trophy eligibility. It should in no way enable double trophy which is specifically prohibited by the rules. As our situation was unique and certainly not something we should want to repeat, I don't think it is much of an issue all semantics aside.

ok, so you are saying that in your proposed solution the competitor's highest PAX based placement of the two events would supersede their lowest? If i understand it correctly its a pretty simple fix, but if as you said there is a rule specifically against multiple class trophying, then it sounds like that covers any loopholes.

The trophy requirement is 50% + 1. In your scenario running 12 events and alternating classes ( 6 times in each class) at the end of the season you need to have run in a single class 7 times to trophy. You didn't, so no trophy in any class. Adding one event gives you the chance to have 7 runs in one class. But if adding a 14th event 50% + 1 now requires 8 entries in one class.

I'd give them a trophy myself, and anyone else that wanted to donate trophies could add to the pile. You choose the reason/rationale. Congrats, they win.

Back in the old days -- when we had to push our car around a course -- trophies were given daily (1 for each 3 entries in class). Nothing very special, but something. I miss that.

...and does anyone remember participation plaques. I still have a ton of them.

You can never have enough dash plaques, my X has a great collection.

Hell, whatever happened to winner stickers for those that topped their class for the day? Haven't seen those in a long while.

We have them but we don't send out results any more. So you want one for last week? I was giving them out at the banquet.

Sure, hook me up! I should be at the next few events. I"ll add it to the old stack, never really did figure out a good way to use them. However, it's the principle of the thing you know.

We may not send out results anymore and some don't go to the banquet and some forget to bring the stickers to the banquet.

I make a motion the stickers be mailed to all last year's winners and going forward they be mailed to the winners at the end of each season before the banquet.

All in favor say aye.

I got a feeling that this will cost me time and effort, but ... I support it.

In fact, if Gary L can provide me with the Excel Points List from season end last year I will take care of both years mailing. I will need to get a pile of stickers from whoever has them.
